Mohit Bhandari MD, MSc, FRCSC
Dr. Bhandari is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery and is an Associate Member of the Department of Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics at McMaster University. His Orthopaedic training was completed at the University of Toronto. Dr. Bhandari currently holds a Canada Research Chair in Musculoskeletal Trauma and Surgical Outcomes.
Dr. Bhandari's clinical interests include the care of patients with musculoskeletal injuries. |
His research broadly focuses upon clinical trials, meta-analyses, methodological aspects of surgery trials and the translation of evidence into surgical practice. Specific areas of interest include identifying optimal management strategies to improve patient-important outcomes in patients with multiple injuries, lower extremity fractures and severe soft tissue injuries.
Dr. Bhandari is currently co-ordinating trials of tibial fracture management and various wound irrigation techniques in open fractures. He also leads the international hip fracture research collaborative, a global consortium of surgeons focusing upon the design and development of large, definitive surgical randomized trials in patients with hip fractures. These activities are co-ordinated through the CLARITY research group with faculty: Gordon Guyatt, Deborah Cook, Brian Haynes, Holger Schunemann, Maureen Meade and PJ Devereaux. |

Emil H. Schemitsch MD, FRCSC
Dr. Emil H. Schemitsch, Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto, is head of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital at the University of Toronto. A University of Toronto graduate in Medicine, Dr. Schemitsch completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Toronto. To broaden his clinical exposure, he trained with world experts at the University of Washington (Harborview Medical Center) and Harvard University. |
Dr. Schemitsch's clinical interests include the management of patients with complex lower extremity fractures, hip and knee reconstruction, and computer assisted surgery. Dr. Schemitsch’s research has focused upon the care of patients with musculoskeletal injuries. His basic research interests include the systemic response to trauma, gene therapy, biomechanics, bone substitutes, and the stimulation of fracture healing. His clinical research interests include computer assisted surgery, clinical trials and outcome studies. He has received international recognition for his research efforts.
Many surgeons regard Dr. Schemitsch as one of the foremost authorities in Fracture Repair in the world. Dr. Schemitsch’s program of research in musculoskeletal trauma has led to hundreds of publications in top journals and hundreds of guest lectureships around the world. Dr. Schemitsch has brought substantial research funding to St. Michael’s Hospital and the University of Toronto. This sustained excellence and innovation has brought great credit to St. Michael’s Hospital and the University of Toronto. |
