COVID-19 Update: Due to the Current Global Pandemic the Annual Orthopaedic Resident Review in Reconstructive Surgery course will be ONLINE this year March 3-5, 2022.
The Orthopaedic Resident Review in Reconstructive Surgery course is designed to provide orthopaedic residents with a comprehensive review of orthopaedic surgery. The 3-day course will cover aspects of orthopaedic surgery over five topic areas: Upper Extremity, Foot and Ankle, Hip and Knee, Spine Reconstruction, and Tumours. The course will include lectures based on a “Top 10 Things You Need to Know” format, which are highlighted by interactive panel discussions. The course also includes small breakout case-based learning sessions. The small group scenario sessions will yield a high faculty to participant ratio, which will create a dynamic learning environment. Sessions will be delivered by our highly regarded faculty, which has been compiled with representatives from universities across Canada. Accordingly, sections of this course will be offered in both English and French.
Registration for the Orthopaedic Resident Review in Reconstructive Surgery course is available at two different levels. The gold level includes participation in the 3-day course, and access to additional OSCE style online cases for study and use after the course. The silver level includes participation in the 3-day course only. Please note that these levels are fixed and access to the online cases is only available through a gold level registration. Most regard Dr. Bhandari as the foremost authority in the translation of Orthopaedic research to clinical practice (evidence-based orthopaedics).
A University of Toronto graduate in Medicine, Dr. Bhandari completed both his Orthopaedic and Master’s of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics training at McMaster University. To broaden his clinical trauma exposure, he trained with world experts in Los Angeles, California and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Bhandari’s clinical interests include the management of patients with complex lower extremity fractures and fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum.
He has received international recognition for his research efforts including a nationally recognized Canada Research Chair in MusculoskeletalTrauma — the only chair of its kind in Canada. Dr. Bhandari has also received the Edouard J. Samson Award for a Canadian Orthopaedic surgeon with the greatest impact on research in the last 5 years, the Founder’s Medal for Research, and Randomized trial Mentoring Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Recent awards include the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Medal in Research, Kappa Delta/OREF Clinical Research Award, Top Achievements in Health Research Award (CMAJ/CIHR), the Canadian Orthopaedic Association Award of Merit and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Mentor of the Year Award (Ontario).
Over the past 5 years, Dr. Bhandari has published hundreds of peer-reviewed papers across top medical and Orthopaedic journals including New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, BMJ, CMAJ, and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery-American. He was recently listed among the top 10 cited orthopaedic surgeons over the past 20 years. He currently holds funding from the National Institutes of Health and Canadian Institutes of Health, and US Departments of Defence for large multicenter trials of tibial fracture management. To this end, he has received over 25 million dollars in research funding in recent years.
Dr. Emil H. Schemitsch is a Professor of Surgery, and the Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Western Ontario. A University of Toronto graduate in Medicine, Dr. Schemitsch completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Toronto. To broaden his clinical exposure, he trained with world experts at the University of Washington (Harborview Medical Center) and Harvard University.
Dr. Schemitsch's clinical interests include the management of patients with complex lower extremity fractures, hip and knee reconstruction, and computer assisted surgery. Dr. Schemitsch’s research has focused upon the care of patients with musculoskeletal injuries. His basic research interests include the systemic response to trauma, gene therapy, biomechanics, bone substitutes, and the stimulation of fracture healing. His clinical research interests include computer assisted surgery, clinical trials and outcome studies. He has received international recognition for his research efforts.
Many surgeons regard Dr. Schemitsch as one of the foremost authorities in Fracture Repair in the world. Dr. Schemitsch’s program of research in musculoskeletal trauma has led to hundreds of publications in top journals and hundreds of guest lectureships around the world.
